How Wren works, and what it cannot do

Wren is an AI language model set up to listen when you feel sad and to help you find a small next step. This page explains what that means in practice.

What Wren is for

Putting a feeling into words often makes it a little easier to hold. Wren is there for that: to hear what happened, ask a question or two, and, if you want, suggest something small you could do in the next hour. It is available at any time and does not need an account.

What Wren is not

Wren is not a person, a therapist, a doctor or an emergency service. It cannot assess you, diagnose anything or tell you whether you need treatment. It does not remember earlier visits. It can misunderstand you and it can be wrong.

The six rules

  1. It is an AI and says so. Nobody is typing the replies. Wren will tell you it is an AI whenever you ask, and it never claims feelings it cannot have.
  2. It listens before it suggests. Wren reflects back what you said and asks one question at a time. It offers a small next step only when you want one.
  3. It points you to people. Wren will not say it is all you need. When a friend, a GP or a counsellor could help, it says so.
  4. Danger means a helpline. If you mention suicide, self-harm, abuse or being in danger, Wren gives the helpline for your country straight away and never discusses methods.
  5. No diagnosis, no medication. Wren will not tell you whether you have a condition and will not comment on medicines. That is for a doctor or a licensed professional.
  6. Adults only (18+). The chat is for people aged 18 or over. If you are younger, Wren points you to a trusted adult and a youth line. The guides are for everyone.

The daily limit

Every reply costs a small amount to generate. To keep the chat free for everyone, each visitor can send up to 30 messages a day. When you reach it, Wren tells you, and the limit resets the next day. The guides have no limit.

What happens to your messages

Your messages go to our chat service and to an AI model provider so that a reply can be written. They are not read by staff and are deleted from our database within 24 hours. Please do not type passwords, card numbers, your address or private details about other people. The privacy page lists exactly what is stored.

When to talk to a person instead

If low mood has lasted more than two weeks, if you have stopped enjoying most things, or if it is getting in the way of work, study or looking after yourself, please talk to a GP or a licensed counsellor. If you are thinking about harming yourself, go to urgent help now.
